What is available in Bluebook
College Board provides an embedded Desmos calculator in Bluebook with graphing and scientific options. Students can toggle between them during the Math section. A permitted handheld calculator is also allowed, but students should practice with the tool they expect to use.
Questions where Desmos may save time
Intersections and systems
Graph two equations and use the intersection to identify a shared solution. This can be faster than elimination when the equations are awkward, and the graph provides a visual check.
Roots and nonlinear equations
Graph an expression against zero or graph both sides of an equation. The x-coordinates of intersections can reveal real solutions, but students must still check whether the question asks for a root, a sum, a parameter, or another quantity.
Tables and repeated values
A table can quickly evaluate a function, compare outputs, or test patterns. It is especially useful when the answer choices suggest a small set of values.
Checking algebra
A graph can confirm whether a factored expression has the expected zeros or whether two forms represent the same relationship across a range of values.
Desmos is not the goal. A fast, reliable answer is the goal.
When algebra is still faster
Do not open the calculator automatically. Simple linear equations, direct substitutions, recognizable factorizations, and exact symbolic relationships may take longer to enter than to solve. Graphing also becomes risky when a student reads an approximate value where the problem requires an exact one.
How to practice tool choice
- Use Bluebook test preview and full-length practice so the interface feels familiar.
- After each set, identify questions where a different method would have saved time.
- Practice entering expressions accurately; a typing error can create a convincing wrong graph.
- Keep scratch work. The calculator does not replace translating the problem correctly.
- Retest the same skill without notes to confirm that the method is repeatable.
